"Can a machine think?" Alan Turing asked himself in 1950. This controversial question not only became the cornerstone of what would later be known as Artificial Intelligence, but also sparked a series of reflections on what makes us truly human. In some way, Alan Turing was embodied in all the contemporary objects and theories in which our lives are affected or intersected by technology and technique.
Wake Up, Alan is a science fiction poetry anthology that explores the possibilities of a (fictional) human journey that oscillates between the organic and the artificial, between the
Human and Machine. The text depicts an unfinished trajectory of our evolution as a species and goes through five stages of existence: humans, automata,
androids, cyborg and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Alan is asleep and the verses presented here try to wake him up, but: Are we our brain? Do we exist without our bodies? Is it possible to think of ourselves without
our languages? What is our relationship with machines?
None of the questions are fully answered, but rather opens others through something that seems to be increasingly abandoned by our species, but that AI is
determined to reply: poetry .
